The report was going fine. I had no idea why Jason wanted me to go, but he insisted that I attend this one. The report was basically where our spies 'reported' what they learned. I usually just leave them to Jason, but he basically pleaded for me to come. So I did. And I was surprised when the girl with the bandaged arm walked in. She looked young. Too young. Her eyes widened when she saw me, like everyone else's. Like I said, I don't usually come to these.
"So, you have information?" I asked uncertainly.
She nodded. "The squids have learned interogation." All eyes fell on to her arm. "And means of getting the info they want."
A voice in the background called out, "Well, did you tell them anything?"
The girl's face hardened. "Of course not. The squids will have to try a lot harder to get anything out of me."
"Anything else?" Jason asked.
She shook her head. "No. Can I leave now?" she said, looking at me.
I nodded. "Of course." She left the room in a hurry. I turned to Jason and said, "You know something I don't."
Jason smiled. "Her name is Jeanny. I think it's best she tells you."
The report ended soon. I headed to the living quarters, and knocked on the door with her name above it.
"She's not there," a neighbor said. "She's stuck in the infirmary."
I said my thanks and headed there. From the infirmary, I heard arguing.
"I feel fine. Just let me leave."
"Not until those bandages are gone. Which will happen quicker, by the way, if you eat a butter apple!"
"I want to stick to healing potions! They are just as effecti-"
Jeanny stopped in mid-sentence when she saw me in the room. "What's going on?" I ask.
Another medic rolled her eyes and said, "Ignore them, they've been going at each other since she came in here."
Jeanny and the medic were still glaring at eachother when I came to her bed. "Can I talk to you in private?"
She nodded and said, "Probably telling me to leave the infirmary," to the medic. He stuck his tongue at her. When we walked into an empty room she immeadiately said, "You..you wanted to talk?"
"Uh.." I didn't know what to say. "Are you okay?"
She nodded. "Squids can do worse."
"So..how old are you?"
She paled, and answered, "E-Eighteen."
I raised my eyebrows. "Really?"
She looked at her feet. "Okay, so maybe fourteen."
I took off my glasses and said, "Honestly?"
She looked straight into my eyes. I saw defiance and determination. She straightened her back and said, "Yes. Honestly."
"I don't believe you."
"What's not to believe?" She glared at me, almost as if daring me to go on.
"Well, you look young."
"So?"
"Very young."
"Just lucky, I guess." She continued to glare at me. I could see why she was a spy.
"You're also short," I continued. I noticed that hidden behind the determination and stubborness, there was also exhaustion in her eyes. "Maybe you'd like to talk about something."
"But, why should I talk to you?" she said.
"I am the leader of this army. After all, it's named after me."
She slouched, but just a little. "And?"
"Which means if I can't trust my own recruits, who can I trust?" I knew I was *this* close to finding out the truth.
"You have a point."
"That I do. So, are you REALLY fourteen, or how old are you?"
She sighed, and slumped back to her usual height. "Twelve. I'm twelve."
I wasn't sure what to do. "So..how did you manage to get in?"
She looked up at me and said, "You need to work on computer security. Just saying."
"Well, what I am going to do with you-"
"Sky, there are squids at the gates! They say they have a message!" The recruit burst into the room, panting.
I looked at Jeanny. "Stay here. We'll talk later."
She nodded, her eyes wide and teary. She choked out, "Okay."
I turned to go. Suddenly, I felt a hand grab me. I turned around. "What?"
"Y-You're not going to kick me out, right? I mean, Jason didn't."
"Wait, Jason knew?"
"I made him promise not to tell anyone, not even you."
I quietly promised to have a talk with Jason after the squids were taken care of. I turned to the recruit and said, "Lead the way." As we quickly went to the squids, I turned, seeing Jeanny slumped to the floor, her hands buried in her face.
